My Personal Review Of, "Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" For Playstation 3
The Highs
Adversarial Multiplayer
The reason "Call of Duty 4" became a smash hit was the adversarial multiplayer. In "Modern Warfare 2" this mode has been upgraded in a variety of ways, adding new class customization options, unlockable icons and titles (known as callsigns), upgradable perks a huge host of new weapons and user-selected killstreaks. 17 brand new maps have also been added, a staggering number considering most multiplayer games offer up around 8 or so. If you consider yourself a fan of multiplayer shooters, "Modern Warfare 2" is one of the deepest and most enjoyable ever created.
Spec Ops
A newest mode for "Call of Duty," Spec Ops consists of mini-missions that you can play alone or with another player (online or split screen). These bite-sized experiences can usually be finished in 10 minutes or so, but each of them has three difficulty levels and they get increasingly harder as you move throughout all 23 of them, so deaths will extend that time. Variety is king in Spec Ops, as one mission may have you sweeping a small village for enemies, while another will have you sneaking past patrolling guards to make it to an extraction point unseen. The best, though, has one player up in an AC-130 gunship providing cover fire while the other player is on the ground just trying to stay alive. Each and every one of these missions encourages cooperation and was clearly designed with teamwork in mind. A great alternative for when you're sick of getting crushed by squeaky-voiced teens online.
Visual Splendor
The level of detail throughout "Modern Warfare 2" boggles the mind. From the accents on the dozens of guns to the war torn maps, there was clearly an artistic eye at work here. One map in particular features a ski chalet on an alpine slope, surrounded by trees. It's the sorta place I'd love to live in, but sniping enemies with a thermal scope from the balcony is a nice alternative.
The Lows
The Campaign's Story
If you finish "Modern Warfare 2" and you're not left scratching your head, you're clearly a smarter person than I am. The story in the campaign made little-to-no sense. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the developers have shoehorned all the exposition in voice-overs during the loading screens, or perhaps Infinity Ward thinks we remember the events of "Call of Duty 4" like it was yesterday (and not two years ago). Or perhaps the developers just bit off a bit more than they can chew. At the end of the campaign ( which took about 6.5 hours on 'Hardened') I didn't fully understand a single plot point. Thankfully the game ends with a shameless cliffhanger, so maybe it'll all make sense when "Modern Warfare 3" comes out. In 2011 or so.
The Campaign's Gameplay
Not to rag on the campaign, but there was really only one level (the Gulag) that sticks out in my mind, and that may only be due to it being a shameless rip off of "The Rock." Beyond that it felt like each mission was another "Call of Duty" trope. Defend this point, blow up this important doodad, run from here to there while being shot from all directions. It's unfortunate, as there are a bunch of beautiful set pieces, but the uniqueness of the gameplay was just not there, feeling more like a greatest-hits of the franchise rather than its own thing.
No Party Chat On 360
As someone who played "Call of Duty 4" with friends online, we exclusively used Party Chat once it launched. It was a super easy method, letting us chat even before we had started up the game, allowing us to coordinate and make sure everyone was in the same lobby…or to tell someone outside the game that we were just finishing up a round.

In their infinite, we-know-what's-better-for-you wisdom, the developer has disallowed Party Chat in the vast majority of the game modes in adversarial multiplayer. The rationale: To prevent cheaters from leveling up faster. Let's ignore the fact that if people really want to cheat this way, they can just call each other on the phone. The bigger question? Why not just let people play the way they want? Do I really care if someone cheats their way to Prestige 10? Nope, so long as I'm still able to have a good time playing. The lack of Party Chat definitely gets in the way of this, forcing me to find imperfect ways around it.
Here's hoping that Infinity Ward realizes that the percentage of players looking to just enjoy the game with their friends far outweighs the relatively tiny group of folks that want to cheat their way to the top.
Final Word
The campaign's issues aside, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" still manages to set the standard for online multiplayer shooters. The sheer amount of content in this game is staggering, and if you can get over the hurdles of chatting with friends, you'll find an extremely polished, gorgeous and addictive FPS experience. It'll be a long while before "Modern Warfare 3" comes out, but at least I know I'll have this to fall back on until then.

First of all i want to give a personal opinion, BUY IT!
Now to the long list of good points
- In the game you play as Cole, a regular guy who ends up with electrically charged super powers. Your powers are easy to master, fun and bug-free and his movement around the city-whether through dark alleys, up and over buildings and even in Empire City's dank sewers-is smooth and a lot of fun. Dropping down alleys can have its kinks as he tends to grab walls etc, this does also have its uses. - Empire City is the game's other star. Full of people, interactions, side-quests, battles, problems to be solved and the all-out fun of climbing over the hundreds of structures available, only the Crusades-era cities of Assassin's Creed comes any near to the vitality of Empire City.
- For the most part, inFAMOUS presents an engaging story and supports it with compelling and varied side quests. There's a lot to do on top of the main story, and it's never fluffy or overly extraneous. In fact, it's the side quests that let you feel the most superheroic-aiding people with smaller problems and ridding the streets of crime.
- The powers are a big hit as they become increasingly more powerful and explosive, he gets access to new powers, while his older ones can become stronger. The simple experience point system makes the whole exercise easy to use and the powers to choose from are all useful. Cole's morality also influences which powers he can choose, adding another layer to the whole process. Evil powers have a darker edge, with more explosion and the red glow. Whilst having good powers has a nicer feel with extra healing etc.
- Morality within inFAMOUS starts out as a black and white (or red and blue, as it were) issue, but becomes harder to discern over time. Choosing to play as a selfless hero or selfish thug is easy at first but the game ramps up the complexity of moral choices until there are some seriously difficult-and very superhero-y-decisions for Cole to make. It makes for an incredibly engaging and emotional gaming experience.
The Bad...
- The game's story relies on its gorgeous, graphic novel-style cut-scenes early on. While it nicely serves up a ton of exposition without having characters blabbing endlessly to one another, it makes things stutter for a bit, but as you get more and more into the story they lessen out and it's easier to enjoy.
Final Word:
This is the superhero game you've been waiting for. Solid gameplay, billiant emotional engaging story full of twists. The living city feel almost real, you'll want to return, inFAMOUS is one of the best games of the year so far.

Disgaea 3 Absence of Justice - by Ayrlie - Monday, April 20, 2009

If you want to try to do billions of damage in a game that plays a lot like Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea 3 will allow that fantasy to become reality.
With class world, reincarnation, and a lot of time leveling powerful weapons through the item world, it is possible to dole out so much damage that your jaw will be dropping. And if you want to save time in the item world, get a Puppy Paw Stick and abuse the Class World dropouts for duping those powerful items for the rest of your party.
The big limitation right now is the 64 person limit on your party, and more than half of those people will be story characters. This really limits on what generic characters that you can have, though a masked hero, a mothman, and a thief is a must have for their item world potential.
Most of the monster classes are relatively inferior when it comes for powerleveling, although Axel is the best magicchange powerleveler in the game.

Rock Band 2 - by bailar - Sunday, March 31, 2009

This will be a short and easy review of Rock Band 2.
Earlier i finished playing Guitar Hero: World Tour, and couldnt wait for Rock Band 2 to be released. Previews and alot of googles made it clear that RB2 would be much better than GH4, because you should feel more like a band in RB2. Now..I am only playing the guitar and this review will be from this point of view.
The game starts off with a very nice and well made intro, that wants me to play this game even more! When you come to the main menu, the backgroundsong is the same as in GH4. When you start the tour you start in Sweden with no fans or no stars. In order to get fans you have to play well. The more % of the song you make, the more fans you get. Same with the stars. The more tones you hit, the more stars you will get. (5 stars is the max per song). And with more fans and more stars, comes more unlocks and more tours. When you got enough fans \ stars, you can play a gig to get a van, so you can drive around playing gigs in order countries.
What makes Rock Band 2 special is that it doesn't end with 84 tracks. All of your previously downloaded songs for Rock Band 1 is automatically useable with Rock Band 2! Most importantly, the 84 tracks play better than those from the first Rock Band.
If you just want to play and have fun, there is a "No Fail" option you can switch on. You can't compete in the majority of modes with this on, but you can enjoy quick play setlists. This is perfect for parties or casual gatherings where all you want is to create a setlist and rock out.
Pros: a good set of tracklist, the feeling of the crowd cheering is much more alive, solo part in the songs, addicting game, cool filming of the band playing.
Cons: abit hard to succesfully hit a note sometimes, songs you have played on earier stages in this game will pop up again, when you play more than one song on a gig, the male character singing will sing with a female voice and visa versa.
Thou there is some cons here, i still love this game :)

World at War - by Tomothon - Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Again; another WWII game, the problem is with this one is that it feels different, in a good way, different to the WWII games that we're used too and i'll tell you why. As you would have realised most of the games setup has a significant similarity to that of Cod4. It borrows the rankings for the multiplayer as well as some of the perks, but this time the multiplayer aspect of the game is full of maps that do not seek to fullfill my expectations that i had because of cod4 and do not seek to impress. I feel that Treyarch heavily rely on the aspects that people enjoyed in Cod4 so much and the thing is, they do not try anything new, the furthest they go to do so is through the nazi zombie game mode, and although this is really fun it gets boring through it's repetitiveness soon enough. It's a really fun aspect though and because of it's popularity Treyarch have listened to this and have promised a new map for the mode, but is this enough to save the game.
The new map will no doubt engross me for another, god knows how long, but will bring many back to playing W@W again. However you do get the feeling that Treyarch do not believe that by sticking to the roots of the COD series they'll get anywhere and are now relying on aspects that were not supposed to be the games major attraction. There are vehicles in COD:W@W which seem like a good idea but i did like the intensity of cod4 because you were all on a level playing field and you were rewarded the more experience you gained nevertheless. The same occurs in this one but the vehicles seem to take the level playing field away from the game and in my opinion we are very lucky that vehicles are not on every map and are only on a few.
My major problem is that if i was presented with both of the games and played them for the first time there and then, i would feel as i do now about the fact that cod4 is W@W with a little bit more polish and care put into the game by the developer. I stick by my opinion that Cod4 is W@W done better and seriously many people wouldn't stop to hesitate before agreeing. Since COD4 i found many other FPS's very difficult to get into and i always felt the urge to go back to COD4 as it was most definetly better and I’m afraid i have this feeling again even though it is another call of duty game.
The thing i try to get my head around though is the fact that if there wasn't a COD4 I'd be all over this game and playing the hell out of it and so obviously it is a very good game and i have complained about everything there is to complain about but i have failed to mention how this game feels when you pick it up and play it. It just doesn't feel right and i do not know why this occurs, but all i can tell you that it does.
It does obtain many positives because who can complain if Treyarch copied a lot of the formulae from cod4, since it was so good. Also it does provide new attractions such as the higher levelling system and more consistent unlocks which brings you more of a sense of accomplishment. They have also included a way to persuade those who didn't prestige in cod4 to do so in W@W. Every other prestige will allow you to have an extra custom class and although it isn't much it shows that Treyarch are seeing what the consumers want for their time consumed by the game and a big thing is by being rewarded. If you want to then W@W is the game to go for. The guns are good and there are a few new perks to mess around with such as the last stand perk from cod4 is now called second chance and it allows you to heal teammates that are on last stand as well which adds more value to the perk imo. I would have liked to have been rewarded for this as many will not see a point in doing so.
This game is very good and i haven't even talked about the single player, many say that it is much better than that of cod4, and I'd agree in many ways. But the main attraction for this is the multiplayer and I'd say to you to buy it for both the singleplayer and the multiplayer but not just the singleplayer. It does not have enough depth and isn't considerably long and there are only trophies to go back to, to add replay value.
My Score: 8/10

Fallout 3 - by Tomothon - Saturday, January 17, 2009

Fallout 3, is a vast, sandbox RPG style game. It includes the fantastic and engrossing side quests of oblivion but with a bigger sense of both realism and depression.
The second you leave the vault you are instantly stricken by a vast wasteland. However at first this seems awesome it's a little less dense than i would have liked. I also felt that to make up for this Bethesda heavily relied on random encounters and although Todd promised that they have an interesting system for this, but unfortunetly they don't. All of them involve becoming attacked by a monster and after he has been killed, running along the FLAT wasteland to your next destination. Because of this you always have a feeling that there isn't enough to do.
The fast travel system is integrated well and does save some incredibly dull and repetitive walks. The things directly taken from oblivion give you know feeling of an improvement. This said, my gripes are over and apart from a few bugs this game is really engrossing and overall a superb game.
The quests at first seem small and innocent but they always lead to something much greater. These are overwhelming at times as here you are, doing a petty little side quest and BAM! the quest gets started. The main quest is far more interesting than that of oblivion and is nowhere near as repetitive as closing the oblivion gates!
The game takes a while to get used to as i felt rather annoyed at first when getting slaughtered by a bunch of raiders although i had a Chinese Assault Rifle. But when you've gained a few levels, perks and skill points it becomes extremely satisfying and no doubt you'll become addicted from that point on. But although becoming addicted to the game sounds a bad thing, it isn't and it gives you 100+ hours of pure enjoyment. If you look aside the issues the game is superb.
The bugs are minor compared to the superiority of the rest of the game. I do believe that although last year there was tough competition, I would have had to place it GOTY. And i'll tell you why... It has a load of quests to do and their depth is both remarkable and incredible.
I cannot believe the attention to detail. From the pip-boy interface to the quests this game has alot to offer and as for the VATS system it's a either 'you love it or you hate it' and im afraid I love it. It works really well and although seems underpowered at first when you get up your levels it is extremely satisfying your sense of power.
It's a must buy for most but for those who don't have it, you are missing out, I give it an excellent 9.2/10 I felt that it needed above an eight just because of it's depth the NPC's, gameplay and setting to above a 9/10 and because of it's minor issues it wasn't to far off a ten either! Brothers in arms: Hells Highway - by GameFrag - Sunday, October 12, 2008
|
|
|
 |
|
|
September 17. 1944 the allied forces performed a massively airborne operation deep behind German occupied Netherland. The strategic purpose was to occupy and hold the bridges that crossing the great river Rhine. Then outflank and punch a hole in the last German defensive line, the “Siegfried Line”.
Again you play as Sgt. Matt Baker who fought earlier on the D-day invasion in France.
He survived the Normandy Invasion and is now thrown back in to the action, trying to keep himself and his men alive. Basically the game is pretty much the same as the predecessors, but some very much welcome new cool stuff is added. Though the storytelling is some what cliché it is still credible and intriguing.
Controlling and playing the game
For those of you who have never played Brothers in Arms before, the game is a crossing of Call of Duty and Rainbow Six Vegas. This isn't a “run`n gun” game so you need to think and plan your moves. Like ordering your squad to give you covering fire while you run for left or right flank to surprise your enemy. This is basically how you play the game. The game is built on linearity, you can only go straight forward or around buildings for flanking.
The control is ok, but I had some serious problems remember which button did what in my first hours of the game. Occasionally I killed my squad members by using the wrong buttons. Slaughtered by friendly grenade or commanded into line of fire and certain death! The latter still happens on occasions, but hey what's war without casualties!? Once I became more familiar with the control, the game got exciting.
Staying alive in firefights has become easier than its predecessors because you have all the time in your life to plan your next strategic move. In addition a new cover system has been introduced to the game. By pushing the L2 button you automatically take cover at almost any obstacle or house corner in front of you. Then you can pop up of that cover by looking over you character shoulder and open fire, or just have a peak. Your teammates and the enemy are doing this as well. By holding the R2 button you will see a red ring which means you can throw a grenade in that circle. When you get a headshot or a good throw by a grenade an action camera starts. You’ll see your target blowing to pieces or brain mass splattering all over the place. That is is awesome to watch. The game contains lots of gore and strong language therefore it is rated M (mature) (18+).
Sound, graphics and AI
The graphics are based on the Unreal 3 engine which means of course that the game looks really good. Although some miner graphic glitches and bugs is present in large parts of the game, it doesn't mutilate the fun completely.
Voiceacting and soundworks are well done. I miss a little more "bang" in the guns, especially the rifles.
The AI behaves ok. Enemies will take cover once they spot you and try repelling your attack in a human way. Your squad sometimes gets stuck, disappear or dosn't obey your orders. They also suck in hitting their targets. You’ll have to do all the dirty work. This is not a bug it’s only how the game works and that’s fine. Guess it would be pretty boring if your squad did all the kills for you.
Conclusion
BIA Hells highway is defiantly not a bad game. Beside some annoying bugs and glitches I had a great time with it. It’s a challenging game to beat, even on easy. If you love strategic shooters this game is a must. In my case, now that I have beaten the game, I have found a nice spot for it on my “I'll play again - sometimes in the near future” shelf.
PS! This review is based on the single player / campaign mode. The multiplayer takes place online with up to 20 players. I will soon come back and update my review when I’ve played that part as well.

The tale of two swords meets the dark side of the force - by Wolfheart - Monday, August 25, 2008
|
|
|
 |
|
|
The battle of two swords continues with the latest chapter of the Soul Calibur saga. Expectations were high when Soul Calibur 4 was announced. Ever since its debut in 1999 Soul Calibur has been regarded as one of the best fighting games ever. With this new addition it would seem that the people at Namco have not forgotten how to produce quality.
The new addition has combined features from both SC2 and SC3, namely the appearance of «special guests» and the opportunity for the player to create his/her own character. The PS3 version offers Darth Vader (as well as his dark apprentice) as playable characters, setting the mood for some serious ass kicking by using the force and lightsabers. Compared to the apprentice, Darth Vader may seem like a 90 year old lady with a walking chair, but then again, one shall never underestimate the power of the dark side. Vader packs one hell of a punch.
Regarding the graphics it is clear the SC4 is visually stunning. It all in the details they say, well the details in the game is nearly flawless. Everything from slightly pornographic female attributes to fantastic background details is quite enjoyable. Of course, strangely looking ducks prancing around the fighting ground strikes as a bit weird. The soundtrack also continues the SC traditon of bombastic and theatrical background music.
The ability to create your own characters is one of the highlights in this game. As you unlock more armour and weapons only your imagination sets the limits. The goal is of course to create the best character possible, by including attributes and skills which make up for your character's weaknesses. This creation mode, and the ability to use your creations in playing single player or against friends and online adversaries both contribute to extending the game's life span. One can enjoy playing for several months without getting bored. In addition to the story mode, you have «the tower of lost souls» mode, which is quite a challenge where you fight many opponents after each and unlock differents features by being creative when fighting your adversaries.
The opportunity to play against adversaries online is an exciting feature. Your level advances after successive victories, and leaderboards display the best players. Keep in mind that facing an opponent with a level 50 while your character has level 2 will provide you with a seriously bruised ego. Pick a fight with someone on your own size instead.
To conclude, SC4 lives up to its expectations as far as this reviewer is concerned. It looks great, it plays well, and offers numerous ways to create your own ultimate champion. Enjoy it alone, with friends or with strangers online – the choice is yours. Worth mentioning are also the unlockable manga characters added to the game. Perhaps a bit weird for some, but it adds to the humor of the game and provides a greater variety of personalities to play with.
